Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun, Please Shine Down on Me.

I hate camping in the rain.  I like camping. Especially the part where I stare into the campfire and drift off into another dimension.  But if it is raining then camping is like prison.  I've tried the tarp thing and it doesn't work for me.  Just thought I'd share that little annoyance with you today.

And before you start chirping in, you anti-campite bastards, I also find it annoying when people dump on the idea of camping.  That's right, no smores for you!

One time when the kids were young, me and the missus went on a camping trip on the Sunshine Coast.  On the last night of the trip we were heading into a campground in Powell River.  It started to rain just when we arrived.  We got the tent up fairly quickly and the family disappeared inside as I began putting up the tarp.

It started to rain really heavily about this time.  I mean it was coming down in a sheet and I was battling with the tarp and getting soaked to the skin.  After a few minutes of this I announced I was giving up and we bugged out and left the tent behind to weather the storm.  We drove into town and found a hotel room.  Soon the sun came out and we lucked out because there was a festival in town.  The Blackberry Festival.  A good time was had by all and we got a good nights sleep in the hotel that night.

Oh, did I mention I don't like camping in a tent either...  The ground is kind of hard.

  1. You like camping but you don't like camping in a tent or in the rain? Sounds to me like you don't really like camping. And I'm with you. If you're not homeless, there's no need to camp. Get a hotel room, then go out on your little hikes, if you must and pretend you're roughing it.

  2. I disagree. You can't have a fire in a hotel room or cook food over an open flame (well, unless you're a rock star). Plus, sleeping outside is just way cool, especially on a clear night with the stars as your metaphorical blanket.

City slickers. You're all the same.

  3. I have a fireplace and I never use it. Why would I need one outside? Cooking food over an open flame? This is a plus? As for sleeping outside, there are critters there. As Dave Berry said, "Camping is nature's way of promoting the motel business."

  4. I love camping and still sleep outside under the stars in the summer even though my kids are long gone. Even had a cougar in the yard about 5-6 summers ago!My "Missus" and I meet two other couples every year for a week or two of great camping at Campbell Lake, canoeing, hiking, etc, it's great. We cook the most incredible meals and have a good old giggle!Must admit Nola does now have a two day camping rule on road trips now, then we have to stay somewhere nice, can't say as I really mind. Must admit we also have a nice queen sized air matteress, and a large, but easily put up tent with large windows, etc. Frankly I believe that anyone who doesn't like, or isn't comfortable camping, or sleeping under the stars, is outta touch with reality!Cheers, xelA.

  7. "That's right, no smores for you!"

For all you campophobes/indoor-cat types, Earl's has a new menu item: homemade s'mores (i.e. they make their own marshmallows and graham cookies, then serve 'em up with melted milk chocolate and a scoop each of chocolate and vanilla ice cream). And I can tell you that it's every bit as fabulous as it sounds. Even more fuel for MacPherson's flame!

I haven't camped since 1998, not (as Seinfeld would say) that there's anything wrong with that.

  9. To create a smore you put chocolate and fire-roasted marshmallows between two graham crackers.

  10. The simple Bluetooth wireless intercom systems we wished for are here! Here are two units that claim to meet our requirements of a Bluetooth motorcycle intercom system that does NOT use a cell phone or other intermediary "hub" device; thanks to Jan from MC Sport in Denmark for sending us information on the Cellular Line Interphone (Italy).
