Put on some Pants

Well it seems my readers are not going to get inspired by the problems around the luggage carousel, so I'll move onto something perhaps more interesting. Girls softball and the shorts they wear. What's up with that?

I went to a game the other day and have seen several in the past. I've always thought the shorts were kind of silly for the girls to be wearing (or women for that matter) because they also have sliders that they pull up on their legs to cover the bare parts when they are sliding. Many of the players are effectively wearing shorts about the same way the hockey players are with the long socks and then sliders going right up the the short line. Why not just wear pants?

Now you might argue that shorts are more comfortable, but this is not the case for most of the season in these parts which is played in cool to near freezing temperatures. In the game I watched the other day it was raining and very chilly. The girls had about four heavy layers on top and shorts down below. Pure silliness. Nobody should be a slave to fashion. You need to keep toasty on the ball field.

Check out these girls. One team wears pants!

  1. A sport where you keep "toasty" is not a sport. Sounds more like a leisure activity? Does, however, sound like baseball. Where you spend 1/2 the game watching in the dugout, and if you are lucky 10% of the other half involved in some minor way in the play? As for wearing shorts, except for when it is below zero, hardly ever here, we should always wear shorts! Cheers, xelA.

  2. There are two men at my son's school who wear shorts year round. And they are ostracized. Rightfully so. They are ridiculous.

  4. Deleted cuz of a typo. Here's what I meant to say...

    Where's Brian on this one?

Some people believe that if they imagine something is true (like, "I live in a subtropical climate"), it will be so.

Alas, I'm with you again Jack. Why play pretend--just wear pants. For at least ten months of the year, it is too cold to wear shorts in the evenings here in Victoria. Unless you are one of the aforementioned delusionals.

  5. Okay, girl here telling it how it is: it's hotter, figuratively speaking, when girls wear shorts. That's why it is the convention. Case in point: Olympic beach volleyball. Those bikinis are certainly not necessary for optimal performance.

    That is all.

  6. What!!! You mean to tell me this is merely for viewing pleasure? That is scandalous. I shall henceforth boycott all such events.

  7. It has been my experience that the softball players, even in their eye-grabbing shorts, don't have anywhere near the same titillation factor as the bikini clad v-ball playing girls.

  8. Hmm' I smell an inferiority complex when it comes to someones legs? Ah well, being comfortable, and confident,in our clothing choices isn't for everyone I guess? As for the women beach volletball players, I have only one thought? Why don't the men wear Speedo's? Cheers, xelA.

  9. Wy no Speedos? I'd guess it is because the general concensus from both genders is that they are decidedly NOT sexy.

  10. Dan, that's correct. Speedos = Noooooo!

Thing is, women's legs are a lot more...er, photogenic. People don't tend to flock to see men's bony, sinewy, hairy legs (apologies to the male readers). Men are ridiculously attractive, in so many tangible and intangible ways, but the legs? Nope.

  11. I fully expect to catch some flak for this one.

  12. No inferiority complex from me. And I have no reason to have one because my legs are dreamy. I wear shorts all the time in the summer. But these year-round guys are another thing. Not exactly GQ stuff. And it's more the "look at me!" factor I don't like.

Since I am the softball player who's game you watched.. I figured I should comment on this one. First of all, I have to say that my opinion isn't completely bias here because in little league I used to wear pants for games, so I have experienced both pants and shorts. At our age it has now become a team decision whether we want to wear pants or shorts.. but shorts will always be winners in my books. First of all, I have to say that shorts are much more comfortable than pants to play in. They are much less constricting than the baseball pants we used to wear. The pants are a lot tighter in areas where girls are larger than guys.. the hips and the bum. Secondly, I do understand the argument of "why wear so much if you could just wear pants".. but all of our layers actually protect us from cuts and scrapes much more than pants do. Marc seems to come home from baseball with scrapes on his knees much more than I do. The sliders we wear around our knees protect us much more than one stupid little pant leg. Also.. with shorts when it's cold out, we have the choice to have our sliders pulled up the whole time.. etc.. but when it's hot out we are able to roll down our socks and stay nice and cool. Finally, there is the slight style factor (I will admit it). Pants do work well sometimes, but when you have huge jerseys that have to be tucked in.. it is slightly unflattering. If you have jerseys that are tightly fitting then it works well and is more comfortable, but the big jerseys combined with pants just don't work.

  14. Okay, so there you have it. I don't know who this Marc guy is that's coming home all scraped up, but the rest of the argument seems clearly laid out. Not that I believe in doing anything for style purposes. That won't come to a shock to anyone. Bring back the tube sock!

  15. "Dreamy legs" but what do they look like in tube socks? Ha, xelA.

Yeah.. We haven't seen many of those pairs of tube socks you got for christmas! ha ha ha

  17. Oh, just you wait. Summer is here and the shorts are being worn. The tube socks are lurking in the background awaiting their debut.

  18. Happy 3 week anniversary since your last post. How's the resolution going to do 52 episodes this year? Should we expect a flurry of them in December to make up the missed weeks?
