If You Don't Like the Weather, Then Step Inside

Little Jackie Showers is reporting live from Whistler for this post. What a wonderful place Whistler is. This week I've eaten waffles at 6,000 feet up in a small log cabin and goulash at 7,500 feet in another log cabin. I'm sure I should feel guilty about such consumerism, but that is for more principled people than me. Oh and the skiing is pretty amazing too!

One silly bit of decadence that I've decided I can't go along with is the restaurant patio heaters. I must admit they are kinda nice, but really people, I think either you want to be outside enjoying the weather or if you don't like the weather you should step inside and enjoy the climate controlled great indoors. Am I wrong?

I await the will of the people on this one, and I'm hoping to see a few more voices than "The Big Three" chime in on this one.

  1. I don't know about those waffles !!!!!
As for the patio heaters --- I think they are great --- especially if the restaurant is full inside and you are forced to go outside on a cold day or evening.

  2. 1) Patio heaters are for sissy's! I used to like watching movies outside at the Ocean Point where they would bring you blankets and alchool drinks if you were cold.

2)If you ate that waffle at 6000ft then skied to sea level, your stomach would explode due to the difference in air pressure.

    My 2 Cents.

  3. As a delicate flower(!) who also happens to love the great outdoors--but far prefers warm weather--I think heated patios are fantastic. If you have to fake it for a couple of months until the real heat arrives, so be it. Vancouver ain't California.

Last December, we went to the Capilano Suspension bridge on a cold and snowy night to see the Christmas lights. Across the bridge, there is a little hot chocolate hut with a couple of tables and chairs, and one very tall heater between them (the hot part of which was well above my head). I leapt up several times, as high as I could, arms upstretched, sodden mittens off, to try to catch even a bit of warmth. That's how far I will go for the outdoor heater.

  4. Who says people want to enjoy the weather when they sit outside? They may want to enjoy the ambience, the sights and passers-by, or just the fresh air. Are you also against lighting fires at campsites?

  5. There is no climate controlled inside option at a campsite.

  6. Patio heaters in winter, air conditioning in summer, both are silly here. Must admit I've never sat by a patio heater, but if I was gonna be sitting outside and it was cold I'd dress for it? I rarely use the air conditioning in my vehicles. As for the campsite fire comment? I assume it is made by a non-camper? Cheers, xelA.

  7. We once sat under a patio mister (a machine that makes mist) in Oliver on a very hot day. That was pretty cool...

On the one hand, I like patio heaters because they work. With a patio heater, it doesn't have to be either/or, you can have your great outdoors and be warmish, too.

However, heating the great outdoors has got to be one of the most spectacularly excessive consumption activities known to man. CARBON UP!
